INTRODUCTION

As always, you can view the photographic narrative for this story below. What is a photographic narrative?

A night in yet another hotel came and went, and we again got on the road early in the morning. On the agenda for the day was a 12.6 mile hike in Joshua Tree National Park to Fan Canyon Overlook. We entered the park from the north on Quail Springs Road, drove to the trailhead, and set off for what ended up being my favorite Joshua Tree dayhike. The route was intermittently uphill, but not too steep, had plenty of good interesting spots to take snack breaks, and is a loop trail providing fresh landscapes throughout. Furthermore, the turnaround point at the Fan Canyon Overlook is well worth the journey. We completed this trail as the sun was setting, providing a beautiful dusk drive out of the park. After a stop for dinner at John’s Place in Twentynine Palms, we drove a bit north toward Las Vegas, where we’d end our journey tomorrow, but not before one last stop at the Hoover Dam.
