INTRODUCTION

As always, you can view the photographic narrative for this story below. What is a photographic narrative?

From Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we continued further windward, arriving at Hilo to begin what was essentially the second half of our trip. While Kona is best characterized by its beaches, resorts, and coffee, Hilo is less commercialized, with more lush greenery. While we were here we made a trip on foot to the farmers market before exploring what was the best bioreserve I’ve ever seen, and possibly ever will see. The Hawaiian Tropical Bioreserve sits on a massive piece of coastal property, with manicured walking trails that take you through the heart of a dense rainforest-like collection of mature plants from around the world. It is truly a must-see. We also paid a visit to the famous Akaka Falls, got lunch (twice) at Suisan Fish Market, and got dinner (twice) at Ola brewing, where I had possibly the best burger of my life. And of course, the beer here was fantastic as well. The brewmasters really know what they’re doing. Hilo was also our home base as we explored the inland Mauna Kea and northern Pololu Valley, but more on those later.
