After an eventful couple of days dodging snowstorms in Moab, we left in the early morning before the sun was up to head south toward northeastern Arizona. On the agenda for the day was a visit to Meteor Crater and a quick jaunt through Petrified Forest National Park before finishing our drive south to Tucson.
Arriving at Meteor Crater, I was surprised to learn that the crater was privately owned. The story of how it came to be so was interesting (I’ll let you look that up yourself if interested), and I couldn’t imagine having one of the world’s best preserved meteor impact crater as a family owned establishment. It would make for great conversation at dinner parties I suppose. The facilities built on the rim, to include multiple museum exhibits, a theater, an interactive digital ride, and of course, multiple lookouts, was impressive and educational. And after spending a good while taking in the crater (and the astronaut manikin placed at its bottom), we traveled east to Petrified Forest National Park.
