INTRODUCTION

As always, you can view the photographic narrative for this story below. What is a photographic narrative?

As we moved into the final few days of our trip we made our way to the Kohala region. The drive there along the saddle road from Hilo highlighted The Big Island’s diverse scenery, with the inland regions displaying rolling grass covered hills and farms alongside cinder cones. This was a sharp departure from the beach vibes of the Kona Coast, and from the tropical rainforest-like environment of Hilo. After passing through Waimea, our first stop was the awe-inspiring Pololu Valley. We hiked down to the beach and took in the sights before driving back to Hilo through the small town of Honokaa. The next day, we traversed the saddle road for the final time on our way to the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, where we spent the last three days of our trip relaxing in luxury. After spending a full two weeks on the Big Island, I left with a great respect for the native Polynesian culture and an appreciation for all the island has to offer in terms of new and unique experiences. It was the first time I’d felt truly refreshed after a vacation in years.
